THE FIRE INSPECTOR'S OATH

R.T. Leicht, Chief Fire Protection Specialist

Delaware State Fire Marshal's Office

I promise that I will always strive to be Honest, Open-Minded, Loyal, Helpful, Obedient, Courageous, Positive, Amicable, Courteous, and Compassionate.

I accept that, as a public servant, the quality of the service I render will be reflected by the adherence and maintenance of the following values and principles:

HONESTY - This is not debatable; there are not levels of honesty. It is imperative that I am worthy of trust from my superiors, from my peers, and from the public that I serve. Without honesty I am ineffective and unreliable.

OPEN-MINDEDNESS - Not only can someone not always be right, nobody is so perfect that they are always wrong. I must always look for the correctness of what others say.

LOYALTY - I recognize that if I am not devoted to the mission of the agency and, more importantly, to those dedicated to implementing it, the likelihood of the mission being accomplished is significantly reduced.

HELPFULNESS – Those that need my help can go anywhere to be ignored. It is my duty to do everything I can to eliminate those obstacles that would tend to hinder those that I serve.

OBEDIENCE - As a subordinate, I concede that I may not be privy to all the issues influencing every aspect of every-thing I do. I do as I am told because I know that it is an expectation.

COURAGE - It takes no effort to champion with that which is popular and easy. I remind myself that leaders lead by conscience and if problems were easy to solve, they wouldn’t be problems.

POSITIVE THINKING - Any negativity is too much. I know that it is also contagious. If I am going to display an attitude, I am committed to it being positive.

AMICABILTY - I will have no enemies; merely friends that I have not yet met. Life can seem difficult at times. It helps to know that I join the rest of mankind in my pursuit of a happy life.

COURTESY - I will not treat anyone, regardless of what their position is, in any manner that I wouldn’t expect to be treated. There is no excuse for being rude or uncivil.

COMPASSION - I will always accept that others may be under stresses that I neither understand nor have I experienced. I will give others all the consideration they are due.
